The International Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Consortium (IESC3) held its inaugural General Meeting on April 23, 2026, at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, bringing together leading researchers and clinicians from around the world to strengthen collaboration in esophageal cancer research. The meeting marked significant progress for the consortium since its inception in 2024. To date, 24 studies have joined IESC3, with 11 formal agreements finalized and 7 datasets already submitted. With more than 1,500 cases available, the consortium continues to expand its capacity for large-scale pooled analyses. A central highlight was the presentation of IESC3’s first proof-of-principle study on smoking, alcohol consumption, and ESCC risk led by the University of Bologna. The meeting also featured updates on collaborations exploring the role of socioeconomic factors in ESCC risk led by Imperial College London, as well as progress from the African Esophageal Cancer Consortium working to better understand disease patterns in high-burden regions. In addition, emerging early-detection strategies, such as AI-assisted cytology and molecular biomarkers, were presented as promising tools for improving screening in low-resource settings.
The discussions reinforced IESC3’s commitment to advancing international collaboration and accelerating research that improves prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of esophageal cancer worldwide. For more information, connect with us on LinkedIn, or contact us at [email protected].
